Cris in his own words…

Since I was a little child I loved to take pictures with an SLR that I got from my Dad. Since then I’ve been learning and mastering photography/post-production by myself to make my pleasure into a profession. I love good movies, music, Apple products, traveling to great places, good parties, creative people and video games.

Where do you call home?

Regensburg, Germany.

Did you get a “big break” when trying to establish yourself and your career?

Since I started my career 4 years ago there has been a lot of little breakthrough moments, like my first fashion campaign, or the first CD cover I made and then held it in my hand in stores, or to work with models that also worked with photographers that I admire etc. My “big break” will be in 2015 πŸ™‚

How would you describe your style?

I would say bold fashion photography, digital conceptual style art and also dreamlike wedding photography. It’s a difficult question to answer, but yes a mixture of all those styles and my personal touch.

When you are shooting people, are you directing them in a certain way or letting events unfold naturally and capturing what happens?

Both – depending on the purpose of the shoot.

As you look through the viewfinder, what is the most critical moment in the capture of your image?

Actually catching that right moment.

Tell us about authenticity.. What does it mean to you?

Authenticity is very important, you have to establish your own style because it’s a big market! Make your work a brand! People who are looking at my photos have to say: “That’s a crisVain!”, even if they don’t know.

What is the best advice you have received so far about photography?

Love what you do. Enjoy it. Stay true to yourself. Believe in yourself. Be patient. WORK HARD and never stop learning!

What photographers from the past or present have influenced you the most?

David LaChapelle, Kristian Schuller and Jill Greenberg to name some of them.

What’s the most important thing you want potential clients to know about you?

Working worldwide. No limits. Very ambitious. You can count on me, because I love my job.

What was the biggest challenge throughout your career so far?

In my opinion every single job/project is a big challenge! You always have to do your best and then you can master every challenge. A big challenge last year was to coordinate 4 assistants packed with 1200w. flash generators, 2 people to handle a parachute, another 2 people to keep the dresses on the models in shape (it was very windy), also directing the models, and all on top of a high sand mountain whilst shooting! I enjoyed it a lot, we all had a great time.

What has been your favorite photo location or session?

The shoot I mentioned in the last question.. It was last summer on top of the biggest sand-mountain in Europe, which was an awesome day with a fantastic view.

What are you currently working on?

An interview! πŸ˜€ Besides that some commercial portraits for a DJ, preparing and planning my next projects, pushing my new website -> crisvain.com and casting some models.

What type of cameras do you shoot with?

Canon 5Dmk2.

What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?

2 years ago I would probably say cigarettes πŸ™‚ but I quit smoking in 2013.

If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?

My Canon 16-35 II 2.8L – best for shooting with strobes and available light. It is also a great lens for my wedding photography in places with low light.

What is your favorite computer/editing accessory, other than your computer?!

My Wacom Intuos tablet and pen.

How important is Photoshop in your final images?

A powerful post-processing tool for retouching and perfecting my images. I also use it for fine-tuning and exporting/sharpening my photos.

Cos we just have to ask…!! What is your favorite +PS tool?? And how has it improved workflow time?

I have many favorites! I love the new Chrome presets, and I use the Beauty Brush a lot which are great! I save a lot of time with your awesome products, thanks for that πŸ™‚

Do you maintain a studio or do you rent one when needed?

I have a 2,70 x 10m grey paper background at home for portraits and compositions. I rent a studio if need be for full body shots or bigger projects, but most of all I shoot is on location or outdoors with a lot of strobes.

What keeps you awake at night?

Good mojitos at parties or Photoshop πŸ™‚Β

Where would you wish to wake up tomorrow?

In one room with all the Victoria’s Secret Angels πŸ™‚

What five words would your clients use to describe you?

BEST MAN TO WORK WITH!

Do you play music whilst shooting? If so, what are you digging right now?

Yes, I love music and always listen to good music, whilst shooting or post-processing – it is always on. I like a lot of different music, right now I am listening to the Tove Lo album, the new Kid Ink, Iggy Azalea, The Guardians of The Galaxy and a lot of electronic music. It really depends on the mood.

Big plans for the future? What’s next?

Definitely yes, it’s gonna be a big year! The next big project will happen in February : A huge underwater shoot with 2 great models dressed in 10 meter long dresses made exactly for this purpose! Besides this the wedding season begins in spring. However I hope to establish myself more in editorials and get published in international fashion magazines and of course travel to some great places. I’m looking forward to a great new year with big challenges – I will be ready!
