Preset Shop Team
What do you love the most about your job?
The odd hours, beautiful people, and the teams I get to work with. I’ve met some very interesting characters during my tenure as a photographer.
What is the best advice you have received so far about photography?
A couple of years ago, a small agency out of Houston, TX : “You’re never going to make it. You’re replaceable.” Great advice. I’ve been known to motivate pretty well out of spite. Cue Drake – Started From The Bottom.
From editor to fashion photographer! How did this come about?
It was photographer initially. The EIC assignment was actually pretty short-lived but an indispensable experience. A publication approached me for an editorial. It started with me vocalizing their branding wasn’t exactly consistent with the direction I was going. They asked why, shit-canned their EIC and offered me the position. Cocktail conversations and unsolicited critiques.
How would you describe your style?
Dark, Antiquated? I love black and white, but I’m beginning to wonder if the industry does anymore. I still do, so I’ll probably keep at it.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is a performance art. This whole thing is a big show; from the runway to editorials all the way to Ms. Jane Shopper walking by an elaborate window display at Rodeo Drive or Oxford Street. It’s entertainment with an all to obvious illusionary undertone.
As you look through the viewfinder, what is the most critical moment in the capture of your image?
The “got it” that one image as soon as it clicks you know. It’s almost like bam! That’s it.
What photographers from the past or present have influenced you the most?
What’s the most important thing you want potential clients to know about you?
Vision + Efficiency; it’s not a myth. You can have both.
What advice do you have for somebody who wants to pursue fashion photography?
If you don’t already have it acquire thick skin. And stop sleeping.
In today’s economy what changes are driving the fashion market place and how have you adjusted?
It’s that ratio that I think has always been present although I can’t speak for the good-ol-days, I wasn’t there. I speculate it’s the same in regards to offering a high caliber service to a few clients and not negotiating your value, versus a less caliber service maybe more assembly-line to several clients. I’ve done both and prefer the former.
Also the accessibility of technology i.e. camera gear and the knowledgebase to implement it. Literally eye or not anyone could feasibly be a photographer. With that level of saturation there’s kind of a really basic example of supply and demand. Newer photographers will work for less and less the market will reflect that. You just have to be the best.
What type of cameras do you shoot with?
Digital: Nikon D3s, Nikon D800 all Zeiss Primes switch between the 50 and 85 often. I‘ve sworn off zooms and AF altogether. Film: Hasselblad CM500 and Nikon F3
What is your favourite photography accessory, other than your camera?
A blue rabbits foot that’s attached to my main camera.
If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
Zeiss 85mm 1.4 T* it’s just a fucking incredible piece of glass.
What is your favourite computer/editing accessory, other than your computer?
Are you a MAC or PC guy?
Cos we just have to ask…!! 😉 What is your favourite +PS tool?? And how has it improved workflow time?
Do you maintain a studio or do you rent one when needed?
I have a studio in Los Angeles in the Brewery Artist Compound and opening one in Manhattan that’s NY in September. I now live in NY.
Three photography pet hates and why?
Speed flashes, event Photographers and anything Wedding + photography related. Now divorce photography…that could be interesting.
What keeps you awake at night?
Editing or models.
Where would you wish to wake up tomorrow?
Somewhere totally random, and then I’d have to figure out where I am and what language everyone was speaking. I have a camera with me right? This has actually happened before.
Do you play music whilst shooting? If so, what are you digging right now?
Depends on the shoot / mood. Spectrum ranges from Sinatra to Rob Zombie to Portishead, really digging Die Antwoord at the moment but it kinda freaks out some of the models.
What lies ahead for you?
I don’t really know. Working on my 1st book, and preliminary logistics on a gallery show.
