Whether you’re a Nikon or Canon photographer, the “Nifty Fifty” aka 50mm f/1.8 lens is one of the cheapest lens you can buy. It’s super handy because of its size and weight and is a must have in your camera bag. So if you don’t have one already, read this, then go grab one. Go on! 😉
NEED TO KNOW
The 50mm f/1.8 lens is great for low light conditions because of its large f/1.8 aperture. It’s seriously an amazing lens to shoot with at night or in any low light situations.
With the f1.8 aperture you can make a really nice bokeh (the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light) style pictures. Bright lights, off in the background, sparkle with this little lens.
Lots of people buy a DSLR because they want the look they see in mags or on the net (a very shallow depth of field) but can’t get there because the lens they are using is a kit lens. Buy a 50mm and this is sorted.
The 50mm lens is ultra versatile. It’s a great street shooting lens, as it’s not too wide and not too long. On a cropped or APS-C sensor it is also a great portrait lens, just long enough to remove distortion from your subject’s face and flatter them a wee bit more.
Last but not least, yes the 50mm f/1.8 is cheap and small – but it’s actually pretty damn sharp, and even more so when you stop it down a little.
Happy lens shopping!
